It’s not this cut and dry. Like everything in sustainability, it’s complex. Yes, AI itself generates considerable GHG emissions especially when training LLMs. But, AI also saves a lot of energy and emissions bc it can make processes more efficient, saves time, can identify ways to improve so many parts of our lives and activities. Looking at just the one side isn’t the full picture.
SOS1 yep this too. There are lots of opportunities for AI to advance innovation that we need.

Not denying that AI in its current form is resource intensive, but shouldn’t this be a reason to make AI more efficient rather than doing away with it entirely?
To me, this is like saying not to use EVs because of the lithium and cobalt mined for the batteries. It completely ignores the benefits of new technology instead of looking at the tradeoffs holistically.
And the coal for the electricity.
as a climate modeller, I think the community has been discussing the 'cost' of cloud storage and chips to generate simulations. but i dont think we are quite at the end of this computational demand.
