A big motivator is my formal formative assessment. It is a mirror of the final summative over the learner target. If they don’t pass the practice quiz they aren’t eligible to take the actual quiz and must then do additional work where the end result will prove they are ready- it could be in the form of an online activity, written activity, or simply a correction with explanations of the errors from their practice quiz. If they get an A on the practice quiz I take that score and they are exempt and can move onto the next lesson. It is a major motivator for the kids to advocate for themselves and be responsible for their own learning.
One thing I do is have my kiddos sign up with Duolingo. Another thing is to have them practice through “ a timed mixer”—they go through a set of phrases with first partner for 60 seconds. Call time and have them each practice with second partner 60 seconds, 3rd partner, 4th partner 60 seconds. Skip a day and do this activity again for 45 seconds with 4 different partners. Walk amongst them. If they lapse into English, remind them “Español, por favor” This is especially helpful for physical learners. “There’s memory in the muscles.”
