As tedious as it is, I've stopped allowing them to do type their writing assignments (for my in-person students, anyway). All tech is off limits during reading and writing activities. Paper copies of vocab and paper dictionaries only, baby. We're going old school. It's worked wonders this last quarter! I also have a policy in my syllabus about it, any suspicion of a translator usage is an automatic zero.
I have a policy in my syllabus that the assignment is a zero if it is apparent that they used a translator. I go on to specifically state how I would know. Verb tenses we have not learned, large amounts of vocab that we have not learned, etc.
I have very few native speakers. So I don't have that problem. could you take the route of telling them or putting in your syllabus that they must apply the vocabulary and grammar skills learned in class as part of their assignment or whatever? Sorry if this all sounds weird, I'm voice texting.
It is very difficult to monitor the use of online translators when the student is working on something at home or even in class (on a Chromebook). So, I have all of my students complete writing samples old school (as mentioned above)…pen/paper (no technology at all). 😃
I have in my syllabus that online translation programs, sites, or dictionaries are not allowed without teacher permission as well as using friends.
They need to do the work, not someone or something else.
All work is to be hand written unless there is an accommodation .
