In the hallway having a conversation in Spanish with another Spanish teacher, a staff member shouts out to us, “speak English, this is America.” I stopped and asked her “really?” She said “I don’t understand it,” to which I said, “we weren’t talking to you, you don’t need to understand.” To make it worse, this is the second time she has said this to me. What could I say next time so she never tells me this again? I heard she has told other kids this too, we have a very high ESL population…

Not sure how to word it, but they are making a racist comment. If they are doing this regularly that is harassment. I would have a private discussion and let them know how their comments affect you and the students. Also that if the comments do not stop you will take the issue to admin/HR. It needs to be documented that this person is behaving this way.

Most issues should be resolved with a conversation to add clarity to the context of the conversation. Evidently you’ve tried this and your colleagues continues to be an ass. You might want to bring in admin to join you on a conversation with this other instructor.

I received a job offer from company A and am currently negotiating salary. I have an interview with company B next week and know that they offer a higher base pay. There’s no guarantee that I will be offered a job at company B but my gut is telling me that company B would be a better fit for me. Should I accept the offer from company A, continue interview process with company B and then rescind my offer with company A if company B offers me a job? Will I be burning bridges?

Has anyone here heard of/used/purchased the somos curriculum? I've been considering for awhile. I dont think my school will pay for it and also my department doesn't want it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Any ideas for discouraging students from using Google translate, or like services? I tell students they need to rely on their brains, after all it is the original computer. Ask “What would they do if they have no signal, in a foreign country and are lost?” They continue to use it.
