Never have a joint account with a man. And if you do, never put anything in it, just withdraw lol. Too many horror stories!
Sorry to hear about your situation. Hope it works out for you.
My husband and I have a joint checking and savings for family savings and expenses. 90% of his paycheck goes into the joint for expenses and mine goes into savings. Any extra pay is kept and doesn’t go in the joint or savings account. Bonuses don’t go in the joint accounts unless we have big family plans.
We also don’t make big purchases without consulting each other except it’s a gift for the other person. We both have an allocation for spending for the month from the money in the joint and that’s for planning date nights or hanging out with friends individually or just relaxation. The savings is used for rainy day, vacations, and investments.
2 individual accounts, 1 joint for basic expenses (mortgage, bills, kids school stuff etc). It’s not a $1 for $1 because he is my spouse at the end of the day but generally we know things will get paid give or take. Not the traditional way and people will come for me but he’s a spender I’m a saver been married 11 years and I truly believe it’s saved us from a lot of heartache. People spend their money where they feel best and we all work hard so we should rightfully be able to. Vacations are usually pretty nice so if one persons booking everything we both have an idea of what $8-10k that ends up being and figure it out after. Ballpark.
Cars we buy what we want and pay the note individually. We did collectively put money in an account for the down payment of both our homes it was 50/50 because we relatively make the same. Again I’m the saver so I’m usually looking at things like refinancing so I basically save him money and he doesn’t even know it lol.

Also do a search in this bowl, it's a frequent question and you will find lots of ideas. And keeping assets separate that you bring to the marriage is different than keeping what you each earn post marriage separate. Being on the same page is important. Probably one of the key things marital prep courses cover.

Agreed. Unfortunately, learned a lot retroactively as well as had financial infidelity so trying to make an arrangement that protects me and my son and helps me sleep at night without checking all of the accounts every night.
Second marriage for both, so our situation is a little atypical. We don’t have shared anything. I pay certain bills and he pays certain bills and we transfer funds back and forth for bigger purchases. We built a house and he paid for the lot out of his cash and I paid the contractor out of mine.
