LGBT Educators

Today a student told me "I don't like gay teachers". It hurt more than I thought it would because I've worked hard for a strong rapport with him. Anyone else have kids speak to you like this?

Heart crushing. This extremely tough BUT there was this heart warming story from a teacher Instagram that stated he was very open about his sexuality. His student knew that and years later when that student went into middle school, another student told him that something was gay. The student stopped the bullying student right there and began to stand for it. He instantly put admiration towards the LGBT Teacher and praised him!

I had students spouting off gay slurs like “that’s gay” and had to have a talk to the class about how certain things that are said allow for people who actually want to cause harm for me get motivated from it. I know there isn’t a bad soul in my class and it’s just a word that’s said out of the norm without the thought of the consequences of it. I now have students who will slip up and say it and they will correct themselves and apologize. “That’s lame” is the alternative I have them. It was a pretty powerful moment. Even the kid that was originally saying it went from I hate gay people to asking me about my engagement to my fiancé. Discuss what the repercussions of spreading such hate create and that in extreme cases can lead to the death of an individual.
