Having a good supervisor is essential but good team members are crucial as well.

I think that’s true of most jobs, but especially government jobs. A good manager can make or break day to day job. I’m lucky to have a good supervisor but I know others who don’t.

I don't think you need a cool supervisor to do well on your job, but you need a good one to keep growing in your career, that's for sure.

It's true that who you're working for can matter a lot. I've had some supervisors who really cared about the work we were doing, and they kept people motivated and in generally good spirits. And I've worked for people who were really just phoning it in and their lack of enthusiasm was contagious and tainted the atmosphere in the office. Managers matter, it's as simple as that.

I accepted a job offer in April to start a few months from now, post clerkship. All conflicts/background check went smoothly etc. Since accepting my offer, the firm has increased their 1st year pay across the board to be higher than my offer was (which was, at the time, what 2nd yeas got). When should I reach out to the recruitment attorney leading up to my start date? Or should I? (Haven't spoken since May) Should I bring up the salary or just assume its higher?

Hello, I have been with the same company for 17 years. I am a supervisor for a laboratory in patient services. I worked my way up and currently have no degrees. Has anyone been able to work their way up in a company and then find a similar job with another company? I’m nervous that I’m stuck based on the fact that I don’t have a degree.

4th year Trust & Estate attorney at boutique firm in LA serving ultra high net worth clients. Trying to determine whether my compensation is fair. Any others in similar positions willing to share their salary/bonus information? Thanks!

I’m job hunting in Los Angeles, looking at a variety of titles (HRBP, Sr. HRBP, Manager, Sr. Manager, Director). I have 8 YOE and my SHRM-SCP. I reached my report limit on payscale.com, so I used a variety of other sites to price the roles (BLS, salary.com, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Robert Half). The problem I’m having is the huge inconsistencies between sources (there are $40k differences between some of the identified medians). (Continued…)
