Would it be better for me to go from an AmLaw 100 (think 60s) to an AmLaw 20ish law firm? I don’t want to get more specific but I have no desire to become partner and obviously don’t want to work more. So would it be worth grinding out a year or so at the better firm to make a better play for in house?

I’d to get a job in a small architecture firm or work for a developer to help build up my network. For the past 6 years I’ve taught high school architecture and engineering and done real estate on the side. I have an industrial design degree and tremendous construction and real estate sales knowledge. I also started architecture school but stupidly switched to industrial design. Can anyone who has taken a career sabbatical to travel/explore other interests share their experience with both leaving their jobs and returning to the legal field?
I really want to live in Asia for a year at least before I have to settle down and start a family. I’m not getting younger but don’t want to be reckless with my career.

For associates who have lateraled in the last 6 months or so, what made you decide to move? Has your situation improved since moving? I’m a transactional mid-level & I’ve interviewed with some great firms recently. I’m struggling to get excited though…it just seems like no matter where I go I’ll be overworked & under appreciated. I have an interview at a firm that focuses on criminal defense. I currently work in ID and have years of previous PD experience. I’ve never worked in private criminal defense. What questions should I ask in the interview? What should be looking at to evaluate whether it is a good practice?
