Raise. It means that I'll get the same $$ next year, and it also means that I can have more in tax-advantaged accounts like health insurance and 401k if a match. Raise every time.
This.
like the marshmallow test ?
It depends how happy i am with my salary. I'd want a raise i think... but then a bonus (though taxed a lot) is a fast injection of cash i could put immediately on a holiday without having to save.
Increased earning power for the future is vastly preferable to a one-time mini-windfall
Bonuses are not taxed differently. More tax may be withheld initially but you get the money back in the end.
I’d rather take the bonus, give me the money now!
Rising Star
OR would I rather get a dog and live as a hermit in the mountains
Rising Star
Raise 10000% for reason already stated plus bonuses are taxed differently. Usually you see less of it.
Raise. A bonus is a one time payment. A raise increases your income over time.
I couldn’t agree more!
Raise but really anything financially, ie not a pizza party would help
Depends. If it crosses the tax bracket, then bonus
Lol it’ll still be taxed almost 50%
A year end lump sum bonus now versus 10% raise next year? There’s a thing called the present value of money. Versus “oops, changes in economic environment, layoffs eminent.”
TVM discount rate does not exceed the bonus tax. But layoffs are a good point for the industry
When raises were a thing, always a raise. Whenever I couldn't get a raised approved, I would always ask for a spot bonus for them. Nowadays, take whatever you can get and sometimes that is a downward salary adjustment.
What kind of question is this? Always the raise.
it’s actually better in regard to redundancies to have the higher salary because it means they’d have to pay you off more. they’re less likely to do it at your level.
unless you’re in leadership with a huge salary, then the 10% wouldn’t make a difference anyway.
it’s also nuts to give someone a pay rise then lay them off.
Raise... besides, bonuses can be taxed to death... and don't always repeat!!!
Raise
Raise. It’s guaranteed.
Raise.
Raise
I would rather boost my company’s earnings by 10% and I’m sure great things would come.
Currently I’d be happy with either, having not had a pay increase for 4.5 years, or a bonus!
