No-brainer. A salary jump like that is priceless. Max out all your savings options and create boundary to ensure you aren’t over-working, which many folks are prone to do when working from home.
Yes, completely devoid of using your brain to evaluate the situation here FI1 and M1- way to highlight this.
God such parrots of propaganda- capitalism is a lie and the cycle will keep you broken. Ideas like this “more is more” is how we are destroying humanity and the planet.
I turned down 40k more than I'm making now because I wanted to avoid a commute. That's how much I revered some of the WFH options
Come on.
You'll be negotiating your next salary from $165 instead of $95. You're not really struggling with this right?
Remote work is depressing. Years doing it. Covid amplified it. For $160k takes little convincing to me. I’d stack that extra $60k a year in ETF’s and retire in 5 years. Good night sally!
You won’t able to invest that whole 60k difference. Think, taxes. There is more to life than making the most money. Spend time with you family and loved ones, that is worth more than any salary that demands so much time away. You’ll see when you’re older.
That’s a personal decision.
I would do it, but I know I am quite happy to be onsite. Not many people have the same mindset.
Also, 8a to 5p onsite is very different from 10a to 3p onsite.
45 minutes in the road is pretty standard commute where I am (depending on where you work and live of course).
I’d take it, and set the difference aside and retire early.
Rarely does it work out this way. Beware a) lifestyle creep, and b) average turnover in jobs like that — many folks never vest and are left holding the bag looking for another job that can’t compete with that kind of promised comp.
Off top you’re spending $21k more in taxes, at 85/hr you spend $680 in hours a week in the car or $35,360 a year. This is before wear and tear on the car which is about $8700. Now to account for increase in gas 30/mpg lets call it 2 gallons a day. And gas is about $3 so $24 a week and $1248 a year. before we get into sleep debt ect you’ve taken home $98,692 for the year on the new salary if $165k
All these numbers are irrelevant because the loss of control over environment and health will incur loss and expense no amount of money is worth.
Rising Star
I'd take it.
The bump in pay will more than cover for the inconvenience of a commute and puts you into a higher salary bracket for your future jobs. Plus, if they already let you WFH once a week suggests they might be open to being flexible (e.g. let you WFH when you are having repair people coming to your house).
I had a very similar situation. Went from $92k fully remote to $142k on site 3 days a week. For me, it was 1000% worth it. Is it annoying? Sometimes. Honestly though, the jump has made a significant improvement in mine and my family’s life.
Just to clarify. The base is 165.000 then the stock options will be added to this.
Are they options to buy? Or RSU’s? Also, is the company publicly traded already? Or still pre-IPO?
That's a pretty nice salary bump. I hate to break it to everyone but going back into the office is the trend now and accelerating. Remote roles will be less then 10% and more likely 5% or less in a year. I have a lot of connections after 3 decades in IT and I hear a lot of different companies plans regarding this. I just had to move all 90ish under me to a 4/1 schedule starting March 3rd. Dell has the same date but full RTO. If this is a career progression for you and a role you are interested in, it's really a no brainer. You are raising your salary cap, will hopefully learn new skills and will be more marketable in the future.
(Edit was to change date from 3/1 to 3/3)
No chance.
Yeah that's a huge jump even though I'm a proponent of WFH , that level of jump I would take it
yes, not all on-site jobs are worth the salary increase but this is absolutely worth it - that increase is worth it. unless you have circumstances that require you to stay remote full-time. but if you’re already in the area anyway and plan to stay that way in the near future, take it
I assume this is a progression in your career development? Kind of a no brainer for me, I hate to say it but the days of 100% remote will come to an end, yes there could be a hybrid model. You have to decide if this is good for you personally and professionally. A 45 minute commute is nothing, I did it for 25 plus years. The next question you need to ask yourself is, is this the kind of company I see myself working at? Or are you chasing dollars?
No brainer
Yes
Why wouldn’t you take it???? Do it for a year and move on if necessary for an even higher salary.
After 5 years full remote, I’d happily go for the 165k onsite, even with 45min drive 4 days a week.
Yes
