With a lot of potted plants what you want to do is take them out of the pot in their entirety and check if they're rootbound. If the plants are really rootbound you might want to put them in a slightly larger pot (and inch or two wider). If they're not rootbound, it might be enough to just flake away some of the soil on the top surface and around the sides, but protect the rootball itself. When you add new potting soil, you won't have to do the entire pot, just replace the soil you knocked away. It might also be good to add some slow release plant foot while you're doing the job.
Thank you!
Assuming you are going to larger pots, only use new soil for the new area and don't mess too much with the existing roots and dirt. Generally, you can just use decent potting soil unless the plant is in a specific category like cactus or African violets.
Thank you!
Are you repotting for larger pots or just wanted to change the soil? I’ve heard that unless the current soil is really bad, it can usually make more problems than it solves. But it depends a lot on the plant, as there are a ton of different varieties out there too. I’d consider looking into adding nutrients maybe instead.
I think the soil is strong to get bad for a few of them. Most of them just need bigger pots do to growth reasons
OP I actually really need to do this myself but I keep putting it off. I have some propagations that have really really good roots too and I need to put all of those in pots but its just one of those things that I never seem to get done. I may try to get it done this weekend though.
Yeah same here. I feel like some of my plants are ready to live on to bigger pots but I have like 14 that need new pots for sure and others that have been in their same pot for years and the soil is starting to look different despite fertilizing over the years.
I recommend new soil and shop tag sales garage sales for new pots to save $. Make sure you scrub the “new” pots so you’re not introducing anything untoward.
Ha that's a good idea! Right now I m looking at these plastic nursery pots cause I need so many it's the cheapest way. I plan on slowing buying pretty pots because they're usually so expensive.
