2.8 LPA → 27 LPA.

Just signed my first switch.

5 years ago, I joined HCLTech as a Manual Tester. Since then, my journey took me through Data Analytics, Data Engineering, and eventually GenAI.

Once I got into GenAI, I started interviewing seriously. There were rejections, lessons, and plenty of learning along the way.

Thanks to everyone who trusted me with opportunities beyond testing.

A lot of late nights, self-doubt, learning, and growth. Worth it.

As many people asked about the resources I used, here’s the honest answer.

I tried the usual route first. YouTube videos, paid courses, roadmaps, blogs. None of it really stuck for me. I would start motivated, get bored after a few days, and then stop.

What changed for me was building instead of just consuming content. I picked projects I actually cared about and started working on them without waiting to feel ready. Things like RAG systems, multi-agent tools integrated with Azure DevOps, and MCP-based applications.

At first I got stuck a lot. But instead of trying to study everything upfront, I only learned what I needed to solve the problem in front of me. That worked way better for me.

I wasn’t following any full course at that point. Whenever I got stuck, I used ChatGPT, official docs, GitHub repos, and a few YouTube channels for the basics and terminology like Andrej Karpathy, DeepLearning.AI, freeCodeCamp, and StatQuest. Which keeps my interst in AI field.

Most of my learning came from building, breaking things, fixing them, and repeating that cycle.

So my advice is simple: pick a project, start building, and let the project tell you what to learn next. Roadmaps are fine, but they are useless if they never turn into actual work.

Great... I following the same format but surrounding me nobody followed this process so I got doubt. Now you gave great motivation... Thanks.

Hi, I recently joined as an Azure DevOps Engineer and am currently earning ₹4.2 LPA. I would like some guidance on how to increase my salary in the future. Should I continue building my career in DevOps and Cloud, or would switching to a different domain offer better growth opportunities and compensation? How much serious rejections you have to face before finally getting a roles as GenAi engineer

like

Three rejections before I got my first offer.

The first rejection was a reality check. I failed the coding round, and even when I knew the answer, my explanations lacked structure. It made me realize that interviews are not just about solving problems, but also about communicating your thinking clearly.

The second rejection exposed gaps in my knowledge. I was focused heavily on Agentic AI, but struggled with questions around RAG, tools, cloud services, and broader AI engineering concepts. It showed me that depth in one area isn't enough.

The third one hurt the most. I cleared the first round and was excited about moving forward. The second round taught me a lot about what hiring managers actually look for beyond technical skills. Then I got ghosted. No feedback, no update.

After that, it wasn't about learning some secret interview formula. I simply got better at interviews. I understood what interviewers were looking for, answered with more clarity, and became more confident in explaining my experience and decisions.

When the next opportunity came, I was ready. During the interview, I was able to tackle challenges confidently, explain my approach clearly, and showcase what I could build. The interviewer was impressed, and I received the offer with the compensation I had asked for.

Your journey may be different from mine, but real skills give you confidence. When you know your build, you don't have to memorize answers. You just have to tell your story.

Did you get any hands on in current company or you were tester and learnt everything from the path you shared and then switched.
Did manual tester experience was not an issue for you for application getting selected

I am also a manual tester trying to switch in data analytics.. i do have hands on experience but whenever i get call they say like we dont need a person with manual testing background need one with pure data analyst experience
Guide me pls

like

Yes, I have hands-on experience and have worked directly with clients to deliver products.

Regarding your experience and interviews, you don't need to bring up the Manual Tester part unless you're specifically asked about it. Most interviewers focus on your relevant experience and current skill set.

You can simply say that you started in Data Analytics (or whichever role aligns best with your experience), gradually moved into other roles within the same organization, and kept upskilling along the way.

Keep the focus on the role you're targeting, the projects you've worked on, and the value you've delivered. Your past is just context. Your relevant experience is what matters most.

Congratulations!!! You are an inspiration for many of us.

Thank you so much. I just hope everyone out there grinding and trying their absolute best gets the same wins and more. They deserve it!
