80% of my job is just managing the fragile egos of wealthy men. The actual law part of my day takes about an hour; the rest is just emotional labor and de-escalating grown adults who can't handle being told no. It’s such a toxic place to work. Does anyone actually get to just practice law?

No? Law is as much a people business as it is “practicing law”. Especially in big law. The fact that I know how to manage men and their egos makes the job 10x easier (because I work with mostly men and most, not all, need their gaps stroked)

It’s a people business. You have to know how to get what you want from your audience. You want a jury to decide in your favor? A judge to rule for your client? A opposing counsel to agree to a deal term? Work them. What you are doing isn’t “emotional labor”. It’s just part of the job.

Partner ego and pettiness result in poor outcomes for clients — unnecessary and expensive fights with opposing counsel, associates afraid to point out issues, losses in court/jury trials due to blind faith in one’s arguments.

I would find a firm that does better legal work.

Depends on the firm, team, and practice area.

Are you telling me that you get paid Biglaw money just to manage egos without having to practice law? Where do I send my resume?

Has anyone left healthcare and is now really happy? I’m an MSN, RN with 12 years hospital experience. I’m burned out and tired of making crap pay. I have an opportunity outside of healthcare that would pay more and challenge me in new ways that I haven’t experienced before. It’s a total shift that would really heal my work-life balance, job satisfaction and budget. My only fear is that I would not be using the license and degree that I worked so hard for. I would appreciate any input!!!!

Transactional junior associate in biglaw. Working for a dedicated practice group rather than in an associate pool. For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time. While the people are decent and the hours aren’t terrible, I detest the work and don’t see a future in this new practice. My main partner says it should end in the next month, but I don’t expect that to happen. Is it a terrible idea to ask to be taken off?

Any advice?
