A company asked if I’d be open to a contract role first with the possibility of converting later. The work itself sounds strong, but I’ve never taken a legal role without knowing exactly where it leads. Have people taken contract roles like that and found they opened real doors?

I would say it matters where you are in your career. Earlier on, or when trying to make a pivot, contract work can be good. Up to you at the end what you can do with it.

Agree. If I am early in my career, I would take a contract work if it’s the area I like to focus on long term or if it’s the company that I want to join.

Ask what would be the steps required for it to convert to a direct hire role? Performance, budget, approval?

Good call

So I had 3 deals scheduled to either close end of May or mid June which were all pushed to end of June/beginning of July. Which is when I have my first vacation planned for over a year (I take 0 time off). My whole family is flying up and we’re renting a cabin near me. What do I do? I’m running one of the deals, semi running the other one and not doing much leading on the other one. Note: I was supposed to not be running any of these. Do I find a back up first or tell the partners first?

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?
