A few hours ago, I was fired because they felt I wasn’t progressing at the pace they expected. This is the second time this has happened, and it’s really brought me down. I keep questioning myself as a nurse. I know I take a bit longer to grasp new concepts, but I made it through nursing school and I passed the NCLEX, so part of me knows I’m capable. Still, I can’t help but doubt my competency right now.

I’m am sorry that you’re experiencing this; however, try to ask for some constructive criticism. I’m older entering bedside nursing, and I know it takes me longer to remember where things are found in the charting system and my confidence was wavering, but luckily I was well supported in my workplace because I had an impeccable work ethic and supported my coworkers whenever possible. I also made myself available to help when short staffed. My character and teamwork carried me while I built my nursing foundation & figured out how to manage my time and provide care effectively.

Don’t feel incompetent . These companies are pushing us so hard that sometimes it seems like like but actually it’s the environment. If one of us fall behind we call each other for support. You’re valued !!!

a system failure by Corporate Healthcare not the nurse....they should be held accountable for putting patients first

I am really sorry to hear that. Don't start questioning yourself now though. You passed the NCLEX an that is NOT easy. You will find a good hospital to fit in.

Give yourself some grace and time. Try to find something that isn’t too fast paced for now and hone in on your skills .

Do not feel you have to hospital experience to be a nurse. Explore outpatient and clinic roles as well. You went to school and passed boards! You got this and will find your path.

Maybe try home health or hospice.

Where do you live? I work at a teaching hospital. The culture is completely different than other places. I worked outpatient dialysis. Very faced paced but you get used to it. Not complex and they always need help because not a lot of people think about HD clinics.

No warning nothing ? Geez

You do not let anyone or any establishment be the barometer of your capabilities. Hospitals are not the one all be all. You got through nursing school and passed your NCLEX. I find that rejection is protection. Find your passion and go for it. Remember the last time I checked, these establishments are not posted on your license.

Recruiter for big tech company reached out on LinkedIn about a role. I asked about ballpark compensation numbers and they said they’re only comfortable sharing on a live call. Replied that I often receive LinkedIn offers for roles of paycuts around 30-50% so I want to make sure we’re in the same rough range. Recruiter again said she would only share via live call. Is this a red flag?

Any advice on how to tastefully tell your manager that you no longer want to be a charge nurse anymore? For us being in charge is having full assignment 3p-7p & being responsible for assigning pts , communicating w/ supervisor about various issues, making the assignment for next shift, and a mini report about each pt for the next charge. On the weekends, same responsibilities but 7a-7p. We don't get any additional pay for being in charge and I'm sick of the added responsibility and stress of it.

Comforting others:
When someone tells me bad news regarding their health, I say everything I am supposed to say (I’m sorry to hear that, I’m here for you, etc) EXCEPT “everything is going to be ok”. Because I can’t guarantee that and I really don’t know if everything is going to be ok. I was taken aback recently when a friend told me I am calloused and cold-hearted for not being able to say those words. Is she right? Should I start saying this for the purposes of providing comfort only??
