Your manager is 100% correct. Your salary will grow, but is it really worth your health, happiness, and losing family/friend time? You can still grow your salary outside of public by job hopping plus have better WLB.
Agree that jumping (or like I did earlier in my career, threatening to jump and getting a match) can make sense. I'm just cautioning against doing it too much too fast. Those folks will max out fast. Balance in all things.
Yes, it’s absolutely worth it. But, I 100% agree with your manager’s statement.

@KPMG 1, we’re in a business of selling time for money. If you stick through with the profession long enough, you’ll make more than most doctors, engineers, etc. It’s not as lucrative as law or investment banking, but those professions work as much if not more than us and have harder barriers to entry.
Definitely worth it. Learning how to manage work and life is a challenge but absolutely can be done.
I’m in the same boat Crowe 2. Does that mean 25-28 more years as an SM? Career pivot? I have a lot of thinking to do…
Yeah, this is why I didn't want to stick around in public. I did not see anything to envy in the lives of any of the senior managers or partners.
I’ve had managers and VP’s throughout my career that were in the $200k to $500k range of salary. They all looked 10 years older than they were and health was all over the place. People always get jealous of others salaries, but not how they got there.
That's probably because they are underpaid.
I've averaged 30-50/week my whole career. Only thing that's changed is I receive and respond to off-hours emails a lot more as I move up. But those are typically quick.
I'm also super efficient, but anyone can be if they just get out of their own way and realize no one's going to die in this business if you make a mistake.
Make it to manager and learn on the job at the level then pivot to a manger job in industry. Hours should be better with more money and less stress.
I make more than MDs do in public at Crowe. So income projects pretty well. When I become tax director I’ll make significantly more. Public accounting especially with PE takeover now isn’t as lucrative as it use to be for people.
Only had a partner tell us - short sleeves, short career. But it’s worth it in long run- but depending on the firm it can either kill you or let you be better on all fronts.
Definitely worth it.
I make good money as a SM, ie would need to be a vp+ for comparable income, but man they work me hard. The constant stress and time away from my kids is a huge burden and candidly the incremental change in income probably isn’t worth it. 10 years ago entering partnership - it would payoff, but not likely these days unless you are B4 (for now)
