I used to have a coworker who would frequently call me out for my lack of professionalism. Got mad, copy/pasted his own paragraph about something back to him a few weeks later, and he again scolded me for my lack of professionalism. So I scheduled a meeting with him and my manager, showed what I had done to demonstrate the issue wasn't my wording at all, and it was never mentioned again.
Show us the email body take out any names, etc. Im very direct and astude. So I'm anxious to see what's the problem?
I always start every email with “Hope all is well”
just to create that imaginary balance. 😂
I find these intros as insincere and would rather a "good afternoon, morning, etc" if you are going to try and be friendly.
Appreciate the idea that maybe you aren’t seeing how it’s coming off. That said, if it’s getting the message and job done, it shouldn’t matter that much.
I have had that problem myself. It's like we have to be like two different people, I had experienced not only gruff and rude tones of voice from both men and women, but have experienced downright hostility. I look at it this way, if you aren't hostile or combative, and you are keeping it professional, which is what SHOULD be done... it's the other person's own issues. It has nothing to do with you. If you're having to always be the "sweet thing," it could very well be that you are in a work culture that does have certain rules for women than for men. That said, remember the old saying, "Honey attracts more flies than vinegar." If you can turn it on and off when it might or might not benefit you, you would have a very valuable gift there!

When communicating with opposing counsel:
"Hello/ Good [time of day] Mr./Ms.___,
Please see attached XYZ. We look forward to your response. [Or please confirm receipt/ please advise].
Or...
We have the following dates and times available for the deposition of ABC: 1/12-15 at 9:30 AM or 2PM, please let us know what date and time work best for you and your client. I will get it scheduled [with the court reporter]. We will send you an updated Notice of Deposition.
Warm Regards,
Me"
It's clear, it's short, it's to the point. I HATE wading through false or forced pleasantries to get to the substance of emails. It opens the door for misunderstanding and miscommunication. The point gets lost in so many words.
Also, I'm not trying to help opposing counsel rack up more in billable hours.
It's an attorney's job to fluff or twist the nuts of a fellow attorney, not mine. I fluff the vendors.
I take ownership for the things I am going to do (I) and leave the door open for continued conversation/ communication from anyone at our office (we).
Internal emails are very to the point. I'm not wasting mine or their time. Although I do care if they are well, or if they had a good weekend- I'm not going to talk to them about it in a professional business email.
I live by the fact that everything is discoverable & I don't want to be the one who put something in writing that shouldn't have been.
