Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

If they already told they won’t budge, I wouldn’t push it. But I also wouldn’t accept any offer that’s lower than market. I would just keep interviewing at other places and move on. Though your market data and research may be solid, some companies just don’t have the budget to meet the market. It just is what it is. I would keep applying to other opportunities.
Some businesses don’t aim to be in the 50-75th Percentile. Some aim and are very open about sitting in the 25th-45th. Ultimately, if they’re saying it’s non negotiable then it’s up to you if you want to accept it but keep looking or walk away. This is an employers market. If you want the role but push they’ll likely move on to another candidate
Walk away if you aren't going to take it. Unless you absolutely need a new job.

I had an interview the other day and their pay was $20/hr less than I get right now and it’s non negotiable. I said I cannot accept the position if you can’t come even remotely close to

I’d take it if I needed to pay some bills. If you can move on though, I’d say, move on.
Straight talk. I'm sorry to hear that's the highest you can go, I'm currently making this or need to make that. I'd be happy to hear more if you're able, but if not we may not be able to continue this discussion.
That's the current market. Do you have a job now? If not, then take it, and keep looking for something better.
If the offer doesn't constrain where you live and work, that has considerable value. Also look at the benefit package. I've seen companies where that can easily represent USD 30k/year difference, if so they don't match 401k contributions or subsidize family medical.
