Advice needed: Hi everyone, I got a job offer last week. Today I spoke to the HR and countered with 15% above the original base. I am not sure if it’s a HR tactic, but he seemed to have been taken aback (said that he’s caught off guard). Has anyone experienced this? My counter was well within the published pay range and 15% above the mid range. He tried to get me down to about 5-10% above the original. Even sounded a bit upset. Is that a standard practice?

In my personal experience, a fair amount of companies really don't want to pay almost anyone (even highly qualified candidates with a lot of experience) more than the mid-point of a salary band. Even their own employees who have been there for years, they'll give them lower and lower "merit-based raises" annually to try to keep them as close to the mid-point as possible. I personally think that's an abhorrent talent retainment strategy, but I've seen it utilized by more than a few businesses.

Pure speculation; sounds like he thought he had you in the bag at a set rate and it's gonna come back on him that you're costing more.

Perhaps see his perspective, explain yours and show compassion. A small compromise could go a long way here if the role is right.

Regardless of how this works, next time ask for 20% if you'll settle at 15% 😉

Are you in. NYC or the Bay Area? That is who gets top of the range.

The range was for the location provided.

In my experience, bargaining for a raise using an external offer does not end well. You are a highly paid flight risk at this point and probably primed for a RIF when the next round comes around. If you have a decent external offer, I would take it and move on.

Yes - they were surprised I pushed back with a request for higher pay. But they met me in the middle.

My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. The new director essentially began shutting me down any time I ask for clarity in my career progression. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?

Is negotiating offers the norm now? I’ve been at my company awhile and at the time I was hired they said they don’t do negotiations, take it or leave it and they’d offer the next person. I do believe we renegotiate now, however I’m not sure if it’s the rule, the exception, or somewhere in the middle?

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!
