Is there really no way to help elderly people in this situation? Legally? I'm in Canada and I'm pretty sure we have a lot of protections here that allow the civil courts to reverse a charge in cases like that. I don't have to deal with anything so emotionally charged in retail thankfully, because I would really struggle to shake stories like that.

There are absolutely some ways for example to file a complaint with ministry of automobiles and I did advise her to do that as well. I gave her their phone number to talk to and asked my manager to look at her case differently too.
That scenario with the car dealership sounds like a case for the police, to be honest. It's hard to believe they can take 10 grand off someone as a deposit. It just doesn't make a lot of sense, but I guess shady businesses will try anything and a lot of times they'll get away with it.

You are absolutely right. She should report them to police because it is crazy to take this amount of this just as a deposit. She was so shaken by this whole thing she started crying while speaking to me and it felt so upset to see someone in this condition.

Absolutely, stories like that linger. It’s hard not to think about people being taken advantage of, even after the workday ends.
