What does "AI-native" even mean?
Also curious
It’s giving Scooter McGavin
I interviewed at one of these as a 4th year in NYC big law… they’re building their own AI and they want you to use it everyday while working to make it better. You’re supposed to rely on it… My main concern was that the one I interviewed with did flat rate billing instead of hourly, so I was worried they would want you to pound out client work way too fast by relying on the AI. I’m sure it can work and the pay was big law, but I worried about the liability and quality of legal work being pushed out.
I consider myself AI-native but view these firms as mostly low-diligence investor hype and puffery. As someone else noted, it's largely driven by mid-level associates who clearly picked up on AI but don't have real depth of experience and are substituting it with LLMs and blind integration of context data.
Someone on LI posted a few months ago about having them as the other party's counsel and it was about 50% positive and 50% negative.
I think lawyers need to become comfortable with it, but if your main selling point is that you're a solo/small firm with 10 years of cumulative experience trying to do biglaw type work, you are selling a low quality gimmick.
If the comp is good, stay. If they are cheap, go.
Biglaw market or close to it? Good. Below market? Bad.
The term is giving “liability issues” but no idea what it actually means
It was named vigil or something similar? I don’t remember the exact name
Does your bonus pay for a lovely dinner or fund a nice car and watch.
