My last place makes this feel like heaven
Been there 🙏 finally got a secondary a year ago. Check out In-House In-Focus Blog by Brand New/Under Consideration. Lots of great insights (though mostly team based). If you can, they are having conference in March. They have remote options. I’m going in person (it’s Chicago). All in-house designer focused. From solo teams to global teams. Met a lot of connections there.
What kind of brand work/industry are you in?
I do recommend making sure you have a good project management system if you don’t have a PM (I don’t). Make sure you have a creative/design brief to answer any questions and establish clear timelines and deadlines.
Understand who your top priority is/hiwrachy. Ie if CEO asks for a project, it comes first and skips over others. If a Director asks for a project that’s internal based and if a Manager asks for a trade show booth and they both have the same deadline—do the trade show first.
Always communicate everything. Especially since you are solo. Let some know you got their email. Let them know when to expect a project if you can. Update them if you need info or need to pivot.
These are things that I didn’t do as well when I was solo and frustrated my coworkers. I was trying to do everything and get it all done on them and all they really wanted were updates. They were okay with delays if they knew about them instead of having to follow up.
Hope that helps!
Super happy to help! I’ve been there and sometimes it was rough but when I got myself in order, kept my boundaries, was accountable and held others accountable — it was much easier. Fishbowl helped me a lot really. I flooded this place lots of Q’s!! I was at a design agency before with 5 designers and then going to a solo in-house was an eye opener!
I’m in CPG so it’s definitely chaotic. Hopefully fintech isn’t too rough!! Good luck! You’ll do great! Ask for help—here, your coworkers, managers, friends, etc.!! 💪💪💪
How long has the team been just you? I ask because growth is a sign the company is willing to invest in not only you, but the "function". Many many in-house agencies are 2 people and they will never be bigger than that because thats the role they play (mostly production art to save money on life and shift, versioning stuff). Your leaders need to show there is a plan to expand capabilities soon otherwise I would start looking for a new role.
