First year: how long without a full ramp up before I should worry? I’m sub-250 hours since I started (3.5 months) and the firm/group are both busy. Other first years in my group are mixed. Worried I’m missing the reps that first years are getting at other firms. Enjoying the freedom while I have it, but I’m still thinking this is odd. Any advice, action steps, anecdotes, etc. appreciated.

I'd take it easy. Paid 205k with guaranteed bonus to do nothing? Living the dream.

like

Why is the bonus guaranteed?

Is that 250 in total? Or monthly?

Are you getting other opportunities to do BD/articles/etc?

It’s like every other big law corporate group that has a lot of movement right now in and out, but I think there are plenty of mids/seniors. I’m hoping it’s that they’re too busy and not that there are deeper issues. The past couple years have been so weird, it’s hard for our 2nd, 3rd, 4th years to compare their experiences.

like

i’ve never hit 250 billable hours in a month & i’m a 4th year

ah ok that makes sense lol

You only just finished your stub period. Year end in transactions is always crazy busy and especially so in 2021. They probably didn’t want to staff someone they’d have to supervise on everything (e.g., a senior would have had to tell you that everyone will think you mean 250 a month, although not a crazy way for a first year to phrase 😂).

I wouldn’t worry about it yet. Keep reaching out for work (make sure you’re asking mids/seniors, not just partners) and killing it on your tasks/deals.

Are there any books or other resources that mid levels/seniors/counsel/partners on here have found helpful for the project management / managing junior attorney aspects of your job?

I am not finding a lot of stuff written for lawyers specifically , but there is a lot directed at “managers” in business generally that I imagine could be applicable.

1st yr at a nyc v50 firm doing general transactional work. I know the lateral market for transactional lawyers is hot but not as hot for juniors. I just want a change of scenery because my current firm is bleeding good associates / not giving great training imo / and just seems small. Would lateralling this early feasible? Would it look bad on my resume?

How do I know Big-Law is not for me?

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬
