I get it. We are a part of the school but feel as though we really arent. Well, at least me. I have said numerous times that we need to be included in the weekly teacher email (should be renamed staff email) as she (principal) puts info we may need like "this Halloween we are doing a "Grease" theme. Most teachers/staff dressed like Pink Ladies/"T" birds. Except for most Aides because we didnt know.
Otherwise they do shout out/praise when needed.
Rising Star
I get it. We have the good ol girls club over here. If you’re not in the principals office chit chatting and laughing it up, eating lunch, gossiping, etc and you like the hard kids, you’re definitely seen as the enemy, at least from my perspective.
I also work as a Paraeducator lll, for a California Adult Special Educational Program. I totally understand what you’re saying about Work Ethic and Respect for us. We work extremely hard and up
Close with students every day, but never seem to get the same level of support as the teachers/administrators. The administration needs to be more focused and more effective at addressing us for what we ALL do to support our Students.
I totally agree, but we (at my school) never get any recognition. It's like we are the backbones for the teachers, there beck and call ,but when the teachers get shout outs, the Aids/ Assistants are never involved .
Recognition doesn’t come our way either, and I’m a teacher. To compensate, I look to the kids and those little successful moments that they have. But, I try to treat my IA’s well and tell the kids that they should have more respect for them than anyone in the building because they will help you at the raise of a hand or by a single word. Love my IA’s.
OP, that admin sucks! Sorry for that because good admin truly make a huge difference. My wife always says, “Act on your values, not the other person’s.” I think of that whenever someone disses me or makes me feel unheard. Maintain my values and actions; I can’t account for the other person. Hang in there. 👍🏼
I’m and IA too and totally feel this!
IAs are the backbone of the educational systems. I'm sorry that your district doesn't appreciate you.
I thank my paras daily for their help. I couldn't teach if I didn't have my staff.
In my 32 years as an aide, I've only felt as important as the rest of the staff by an assistant principal for about two years. He moved on. He recognized that support staff is the backbone of most schools. Not gonna lie, it felt great.
I am so sorry that you are not being treated well. I have always felt that every person on our campus is my equal. It doesn’t make any difference what your job is. We all want the same results and have to work together.
Yep! For real. Most administrators & teachers definitely ignore aides. We are unappreciated for the work we do. It’s very disrespectful. But, I just try to be nice to the kind ones. And the ones that do ignore me, it depends on my mood if I’ll try to mend the gap or not.
