I started out doing municipal work, the work I didn’t mind at all, hated land use and zoning, also didn’t like that fact of board meetings at night long term which is why I got out of it, steady work tho, low rates another con.
I’ve been both with a private firm in the municipal space, and now with an in-house public agency performing the same work, and I would recommend doing a comprehensive pay comparison across public and private options in this space! I actually make more in-house than I did for a private firm, ironically, and the benefits are far better as well. Substantively, I personally love the work—it is by its nature ever-changing and every single day looks completely different, which is what I love about it, but I think people craving consistency in workflow/types of work/schedule may not enjoy it! There is also the component of potentially being expected to go to evening meetings which do not typically have set start and end times—and if you’re at a firm that is a contract attorney for multiple different municipalities, that likely means a lot of travel, which was one of the things that resulted in me going in-house. Happy to chat more if it would be helpful!
