I buy the generic canon refills on Amazon. Costs about 1/5 the price of brand name and I never had any compatibility issues or problems.
I have a Brother toner printer. They last quite a bit. I printed out my Master's thesis three times and still didn't have to refill for a long while. Buy generic refills but keep the original toner even after it runs out in case you need to trick your printer into thinking you have an original.

Came here to say this ^
Not a specific printer recommendation but I switched to toner printers and they last sooo much longer. Maybe something you can look into
You can do HP Instant Ink plan where you pay by number of pages per month, you can rollover pages and they send you ink automatically when yours is running low and you send them back used cartridges so they can appropriately dispose of them). Still does not change how quickly cartridges run out 🙂 but I pay $2.99/month and feel it’s well worth the money
HP LaserjetP1102w is a good b&w only printer
Brother black and white laser with fake toner. So happy with mine

Buy a toner printer only, get toner powder refills on Amazon/eBay. Surprisingly easy/fun project.
I have a hp laser jet 1505. Got it off of Facebook market place for $40. I didn’t need it to print in color, scan, or anything fancy. If I need to scan anything, there’s always my phone. I’m sure you can find something local, too.
