Anybody out there just not go back to their firm after maternity leave? How did you handle it? Did people take it well?

We had a guy give notice the day he got back from paternity leave. Practically it was ideal since he wasn’t staffed on anything, but the firm was furious and he burned a ton of bridges.

this makes sense and ppl would be rightfully pissed

We’ve had attorneys who chose not to come back after maternity leave. At the end of the day, everyone respects their decision. You have to do what’s best for you and your family.

For those who know people who did not go back, did the firm make them repay their leave?

I think the better option is to try to work with the firm on a schedule that works. If that does’t work after a few months, it’s more reasonable to bail.

OP- daycare was a non-starter for me too. I negotiated with a firm to work about 800 hours a year, super low stress, when my kids were small. I mostly worked while they napped but we also had a nanny. It worked well and kept me in the game. Leaving entirely is a big risk. I hope it works out OK for you.

What is the variable pay does Macquarie give year on year ? And is there a surety that we will surely get a decent variable pay as well over our fixed package since I don't find anything mentioned regarding this variable pay in my offer letter. Yoe- 8 and tech - selenium testing, and position- assistant manager.
If yes, how much one can expect in variable pay for fixed compensation of around 25-30lpa.

Second year associate here who recently switched from litigation to corporate law. I am absolutely swamped while simultaneously having no idea what I’m doing ever and I’m feeling so burnt out. The partners are pretty great and feedback is constructive which I’m grateful for, but I’m so desperate for a compliment I’ve been saving any scrap of positivity in a folder 😭 it’s December 22 and I haven’t done my Christmas shopping because I don’t feel capable of thinking about it. I need a hug.

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
