Take the title and start looking for new jobs with it
always take the money, don't worry about titles.
both feed the ego, but only one pays the bills.
more title means they bill clients more. get that paper
At most agencies, a title upgrade is in lieu of actual financial compensation. It’s like the car wash the dealer throws in after you get your car serviced: it looks good and makes you feel better, but adds no meaningful value and wears off in about a week.
It also means you’ll start having more responsibilities and expectation without the pay. However, an upside to this is that now you can leave for another agency with a higher title, where you will probably negotiate a real wage that matches the title.
@OP - title promo without pay raise is a hollow gesture, meant to shut you up without the agency having to do jack shit. don’t take it. demand (nicely) a raise with it. it won’t even help you get a higher position somewhere else, because you’d only have been a senior for a few months before you leave.
@AE1 - art director to senior art director title will likely not change the agency fee change. usually happens at ACD level, then CD. but anything under ACD is charged the same.
Yeah, I see both sides of The argument. But I figure it can’t hurt to have the title whole looking to move on
Take the title and then jump ship for that $$$
Serious question... are you male or female? I say this with knowing I’ll get eye rolls but when I was promoted this similar line of discussion was had. So I went to my male colleague with the title I would soon be promoted to and asked his salary. I took that info and waited to see what would happen. Bullshit happened and I very cautiously made a case (market value type stuff) knowing exactly what I should be around. I never got the exact amount as the male, but 4K less and still 15k more than my previous title. (For the record I was underpaid). It’s always good to do your homework, know your worth, and play your hand smartly.
If there’s no go on more money. Do what everyone else is saying and use your new title to launch into a new role with more dough somewhere else. Good luck 🍀
OP, do you know other Senior Art Director salaries at your company? That’s what your new title would be right? It’s helpful to know your partners salary too. For the record, I never dropped this card, I never said “Bob makes xxxxx” I just used it to guide the convo like “the senior art director role has a 5% increase “ or whatever.
I hear you on waiting and never getting. Ad agencies use that against their employees bec they know they have you by the ovaries. I agree with taking what you can get and making yourself marketable at a higher level, but a promotion without a raise is like a dude saying you’re his gf but only behind closed doors. All work, no perk.
Can you present your boss with reasons you’re being promoted and how that equals more pay? Leadership, mentorship, influencing process, owning or taking the lead on projects, showing initiative??? These are all qualities a good boss wouldn’t want to lose for a few thousand dollars.
Finally, I’m sorry to say this, but a lot of women will tell you being a female is working against you. Would your male partner accept less? I’m not trying to beat a dead horse but I’d be foolish to think my company wanted to pay me a 15% increase without me “manning up” and playing hardball.
I’ll say this, when I made senior I had to scratch and claw for half the money I wanted to go with the title. But I made senior early and marketed myself as a senior to other agencies. Within a year I was at a new agency making 10k more than I had been seeking at the first. Though ultimately it’s your work that’ll get you paid/hired someplace new, not your title.
When you say skipped over for a promotion, do you mean skipped over for a raise? Because the title change would be considered a promotion (to them, on paper). Theyre definitely offering that to you so you’ll feel better about not getting a raise though. So yes you should tell them youll wait to get the raise that comes with the title bump.
But you might be waiting a while. I dont know how long youve been there already, and how long youre willing to wait.
All good points. Thanks for the POV
It looks good on your resume if you get promoted. Then u can shop that title elsewhere
Take the title and keep asking for money. But also look at other agencies because you have a promoted title now. The current one will never pay you as much as a new agency.
Take the title and immediately leave (as soon as you can). They will do this to you over and over again until you’re an ECD making 75k
Also, it’s TECHNICALLY illegal to change your job title and not reassess your salary
