Anyone else’s firm have a policy that you can’t use vacation time immediately prior to maternity leave? For example, you can’t take a week off before a scheduled induction/c section. Are we supposed to go into labor in the office?

Do you want your hours clock to stop, or just to be out of the office?

The issue I ran into was that I was down to the wire trying to make hours, and I really needed the clock to stop. I wish that I could’ve used some approved leave early to end my pro rated billable year, but that wasn’t an option.

If you want to not work, I would just do that. Just say you’re out of pocket at an appointment, or block off time on your calendar, or do whatever you need to do to tell whomever that you’re not available. I don’t think I would make a big thing out of announcing a vacation, just sort of quiet quit for a week or whatever if you need to. If anyone asks or makes an issue out of it, just say you were dealing with some health issues. Late stage pregnancy definitely merits a sick day.

Thank you. I couldn’t care less about making bonus at this point. I’m in survival mode 🫣

This was a long time ago, but I was able to have my doctor write a note for short term disability so I could stop working 2 weeks before my due date. There was no remote work then and the commute was really hard for me.

Yes, it was short term disability in NY. Maybe it was a percentage of my salary and not full, I don’t remember exactly (this was with my first, 15 years ago!). You can talk to HR and see if they know anything about it.

Can’t you just start your leave a week early? Lots of people do that.

I think that’s the trade-off. I used one of my parental leave weeks prior to delivery. My leave was 16 weeks in total, so I had 1 to myself before baby arrived and 15 with my little guy. I would 100% do that again. It was the BEST decision, for me. That extra week with baby would’ve been nice, but that one week to get ready was way more beneficial. I was able to finish prepping the nursery, prep my frozen meals for first few postpartum weeks, sleep (a ton), read a book, do all the laundry, pack my hospital bag, and prepare my mindset for labor and motherhood. I had a fancy steak dinner out with my husband 2 nights before planned induction, and headed to the hospital feeling prepared and rested. I was in a very busy practice, so if I hadn’t taken the time away from work, none of those things would’ve been done. Congrats and good luck!
