I recently offered $20k higher than a candidate gave in their ballpark. Because as a manager I know it’s easier for me to get people in higher at hire than it is to get significant merit based pay bumps approved. I hope it will give him one less reason to start looking elsewhere over the years (incentivize him to stay). He was shocked by the number and I told him you’re worth it and I want you to have a good quality of life - because life quality drives work quality!
This is the way
I think it’s possible to both overbid (in which case they simply can’t afford you) and underbid (in which case you may appear unqualified.)
An external recruiter asked me for my salary range for a staff CD role at a mid-sized NYC agency and I gave what I thought was an appropriate but slightly inflated $200-$225K.
She replied, “Ok, good they’re budgeting $250K.”
Last week I gave a number to an internal recruiter (different mid-sized NYC agency) and was told it was $40K over their budget.
It’s like bidding on The Price is Right Showcase.
Yes! I went high and they still tacked on $2k for me to seal the deal.
Just had it go both directions. Gave the same dream range to two different places (one agency, one brand side with the roles about as equivalent as can be).
Agency recruiter said the ask was too high for them and shut the door on meeting the team even though she was only 5-10k off and I was still interested. So bad recruiting IMO.
Brand side recruiter came back above my dream ask and I’m currently discussing another bump based on the role responsibilities.
I think it’s always worth asking for an amount that would really make you happy. I’ve taken roles in the past that were just under what I wanted and it always bothered me. I know what I’m worth and it never feels good to do it for less.
Yeah $15k and my dumb self didn’t even negotiate for more cause I was in shock! Haha
Lmaoooo I mean you have a fair point
Yes - $15K
I heard stories about it, but never experienced myself. More on the client side.
Chief
5k
I gave a $10k range and they went with the highest end which was pretty sweet
