Why are you so mad CW1? Did your ex go to PSU? Did you get rejected by them? Did you go to UPenn? No one cares as much as you do. That wasn’t the point of this post.
Harvard extension is not harvard. Anyone can get in. Harvard business school exec ed is highly regarded, though. Extension not so much.
Not a hiring manager, but my program had both in-class and online sections. In the end everyone received the same degree. Check to see if these online programs award you the same degree as an in-person student before making a decision.
Penn State is not nearly in the same camp and caliber as Harvard or Cornell. Come on, you should know this
BBDO1, not even close to the point. Come on, you should know this.
I will say though, OP, one of my clients used to be HES and I took a class there. It was on Harvard campus, taught by a Harvard professor, but no, it doesn’t hold the same weight. Not the same admission requirements, not the same astronomical rejection rate, not the same tuition lol. My rule of thumb is that if they do go to those lengths to separate themselves, then it’s different. In terms of “impressiveness” I think it depends on the program you take. If you’re getting your MBA and want to work in finance, spend the extra time and money. If you’re looking for some personal education you can speak to and hopefully use in your work, I personally don’t think it matters that much. Hope this helps!
Penn State creates more CEOs than any other university... so tell me again about judgy mc judgerson.
PS. Not a penn state grad. I went to one of those “elite" universities
I went to penn state and I’m just here to say it’s a great school and I’m damn proud to be a Nittany Lion 🤷🏽♀️. I got an education in advertising and business I couldn’t’ve gotten anywhere else.
The point is while not a Harvard, they are still a pretty damn good school that shouldn’t be knocked like Brown or some trash like Yale.
I was wrong. By the by. Number 1 in CEO is Stanford. #2 is Penn State. My bad y’all
Are online degrees from these schools seen as 'less-than' than a degree from the traditional brick and mortar school? Thinking of a grad degree but don't want to waste my time and $. I find it interesting that they all go to great lengths to distinguish the online school from the regular. For example, Harvard's is called Harvard Extension School and Penn State's is called Penn State World Campus
Actually, BBDO is right. OP is asking if online degrees and “brick and mortar” degrees hold the same weight. The point here is that a degree from Penn State simply isn’t impressive. It’s an average school at best.
@Director 1
That’s a pretty silly statistic to reference. Penn State is one of the largest universities in the nation, with over 40,000 undergraduate students. Of course they pump out CEOs! I bet they also produce the most lawyers, doctors, and scientists.
You’ve actually supported my point: there’s nothing special about a degree from Penn State (millions of people have degrees from there)
Stanford only because of Silicon Valley where you can b come a CEO at will.
They aren’t the same, at all, not in a million years.
You don’t hire Harvard grads over Penn state grads because of the coursework. You hire them because they’ve succeeded in an extremely competitive space across all dimensions that matter, and they’re comfortable being around elite, successful people.
That’s not to say people from Penn state can’t be successful.
But it’s just way easier to hire from the top few schools if you’re optimizing against intellect and competitiveness. And hiring is time consuming enough as it is.
But I get why this fact upsets people
I knew a guy who went to Hartford but would say it fast to impress people.
@SD1. Obviously. That’s why people kill themselves to get into those schools. Thanks Capt Hotel Obvious.
Read Malcolm Gladwell re. Pointlessness of overoptimising a (effectively arbitrary) group of super elites from Harvard vs. growing the next tier down for lower burnout, more varied goal setting. His point is that of all the people who do get into Harvard vs. Those who just miss out are indistinguishable, it will be something silly dividing them. The school system by college is a small fish big nepotistic pond vs. Challenger underdog.
Agreed that those just missing harvard are just as good. But the land between those folks and the extension school peeps is vast.
