Have you thought about staying but switching to an internal role at your firm? (Learning, independence etc.) I was a tax SM and switched to our learning team and it was the best career move ever. Much better in terms of work life balance. Yes the excellent raises are gone but it has been a 10/10 experience for me.
I help the team and the practice decide what classes we need to run and all the logistics that go behind the scenes (CPE, facilitators, locations etc.). Not always stress free but so much better than client service.
I completely agree. I have been looking for exit opportunities for months and am finding it very difficult to find anything that isn’t pivoting to another PA firm. At this point I am so far along at my current firm it wouldn’t make sense to start fresh. But leaving to any industry role would also be a major decrease in salary, beyond a level that is feasible to work through short term.
I got a $30k raise to move to industry as a SM to SM! So not always a major decrease in salary. I just don’t enjoy the work though so am going back to public lol
Where do you currently work? If big4 and you want better work-life, try going to a mid tier firm.
I am ex big4 and 1 year away from partner promotion at a midterm firm (not rsm). I work way less now than at big4 or even rsm. This is another top 10 firm.
Still in public but on a reduced schedule. The pay cut was worth it.
Same
I left public accounting because it became so overwhelming and I was even feeling bored on the job. I switched businesses and now I have my own company and I do property management and other stuff on the side and still maintain my CPA title. At a certain point the one has to make a decision where they want to continue. I feel sometimes having the CPA title people feel that they are tied to the accounting profession and that they have to continue their career in this path. However, we need to be flexible to do what's best for us even if it means switching carriers all together
I think it is less of the CPA and more the fact of finding something with similar pay that will be a better wlb doesn’t seem very possible
Internal audit = strong WLB
Sorry to hear
Feeling the same here. Market is hard as well, employers have their choice of people who made the jump already to private and have both public-private experience.
You can pivot if you clearly understand where to. This is usually the main task. If you do not define your next role for yourself, you can’t find it. I have sat on it for 1.5 years and my issue was I did not know what role will meet the experience level I wanted to keep as well as slower pace and predictable schedule I wanted to switch to. It’s hard but once you identify that, you can narrow down your search and keep applying for those specific jobs.
You got this.
The struggle at my level is we are to too expensive at times. Especially if we were always in public, we don’t have that private experience which some companies are looking for. And companies haven’t been very open to dropping a level cause in actuality they probably can find a younger, cheaper person to grow into a role
I put up boundaries and stayed in PA. Quite happy
Yes feel free to send a DM
Good luck to both of us - I'm in the same boat as you.
I want to go private and have been looking for a few months now. It's been very difficult to find a job there. And I get dozens of messages from recruiters asking if I want to make a move to another public accounting firm - no thanks...
Also for those who say "go smaller", I was at a smaller firm (like top 50) for a year and the work life balance was as lacking as Big 4
/large midsized and it was more dysfunctional. Ended up going back.
Hoping for the best for both of us! I also get worried about private cause some of those I’ve seen are running super thin and so there is stress there as well
I’m in the exact same boat
