Think less about how your resume looks and more about what your whole life looks like. If you’re smiling in the morning as a result of changing your role, that’s what’s most important.
Mentor
I did this the last few years because I realized the expectations of leadership didn't match the incentives/rewards. I do the same work and mentoring as a senior IC, I'm just not "accountable." I also have refused to take a financial hit. Burnout forces you to listen to your body and get clear on who you are truly. If you listen. That said, I continue to show up as a leader and have leadership on my resume, so while I continue to get recruited for those roles it is a conversation to navigate carefully. Companies don't really care that you need more rest or want to pivot your focus from 100% on their work. Also, consider where you are in your career. Many companies are downsizing management levels and it can be hard for some with a shorter track record or that have worked with less organizations to come back to management right now. In which case, it may be more opportune to look at delegating more and other ways to scale back without stepping down. But overall careers are long, it may just require building confidence in others again. You’ll know what's right for you.
Thinking of doing same. I find “management” to be overrated.
I think it is all about how you message it. Have an great story as to why! "I have been a creative director, but the opportunity to do X with a company that focuses on __something different and decisive about the other company__ is an exciting opportunity to grow my expertise..."
Do you mean step down as not working?
