Thank you for all the advice. Update- met with neuro & surgeon & oncologist Thursday and all agree his other leg will be able to withstand the body weight, so ultimately we are amputating it. Scheduled for next Wednesday and I am hoping for the best. The tumor has grown quickly and after the vets reassurance I didn’t have much time to debate. Hoping for the best but keep us in your thoughts. Pic bc why not
My MIL has a tripod due to cancer diagnosed when he was maybe around 8. He was expected to go another 2 years but he’s approaching 12. It was a front leg. Life expectancy for this breed is 12-15.
I personally don’t think he ever got the knack of walking on 3 legs down as well as I’ve seen other dogs do (he also has arthritis) but he lives a full life, still has PT, and they have a professional evaluate him periodically and so far they’ve always recommended keeping him going- he appears to be a happy dog.
He doesn’t do long walks- they do stroller him- BUT they have decked their house out in soft mats and rugs that he does go back and forth on just fine.
Oh, that is a complicating factor. They have a 1 level with basement and he never uses the stairs.
Dog parent with dog with ivdd with stairs. I’m the personal escalator for my dog. She’s learned to just wait to be picked up to get up and down. If your dog doesn’t coop there are baby/dog gates that can be put in. Steps and ramps are helpful with seats and beds. Dogs are fighters. Give them the best shot at life
Also not sure if you have the budget but I found a good physical therapist helpful for strengthening the key muscles. My dog loved her appts but at some point the therapists said they plateaued in progress. I think we got further along with their help and continued to get stronger with frequent short walks
I’ve seen corgis use doggy wheelchairs really well! If you are open to that I would go that route especially if he’s still enjoying life!m. Get that cancer out of there. Would radiation or chemo not be an option?
Chemo isn’t an option and radiation doesn’t work well with this type of cancer unfortunately

Really sorry you’re having to go through this. But your focus on keeping him going and having the best life possible is what matters. Stay strong and hugs to your bestie. ❤️
