Are men’s watches with steel chain bracelet type of band considered more luxury than ones with leather or rubber. I wanna buy a luxury watch so I don’t wanna make a rookie mistake.
Also when I go online there’s things about watch movements like Chornos, automatic , hand etc. what on earth do they mean. Should I care about them? Which is one is “the best”

So coming from someone new to watches:

- nothing is truly “the best” in my opinion. Watches, like cars, are used in a variety situations, and come with different options. You just need the find the best options for you

- leather = dressy, excluding leather NATO straps
- stainless = all around, you can dress it up, or you can dress it down, if you’re looking for a “one watch shop” I’d look into stainless
-rubber = sporty, you wouldn’t wear it with a suit

As for movements, I’m still learning. I wouldn’t focus too hard on that for now. Since it seems like you’re new to this as well, I’d focus on brand, price point, and style. You want something you feel comfortable wearing in a variety of situations, and of course something you find aesthetically pleasing.

Something to watch out online: only go with trusted sources if you are new to the game. There are many fake watches out there

Just some quick points no one has covered yet:

- automatic chronograph movements will be more expensive than a standard 3-hand + date movement

- typically you’ll buy the watch on steel as there’s plenty of aftermarket leather/rubber straps but very few metal bracelets

- you will have a lot to discover about luxury watches, such like the more expensive the watch gets the less good it is at telling time (a $20 Casio keeps time better than a $20,000 Vacheron lol) but as you have all these thoughts and work thru them in your head you’ll realize that it doesn’t matter. You’ll have plenty of these realizations throughout your journey in luxury watches, and working through those thoughts is a big part of watch collecting and you’ll see your thoughts on watches will change big time within the first few years

Hand. Hand is the most luxurious.

Kidding, glad you are interested in learning. Here is a short primer on movements to get you started

30th birthday present watch accessory ideas.

A lot of knowledge on here so asking for some help. It’s my partner’s birthday and I’ve no idea what to buy him. He’s a watch fanatic - Pateks (sports and dress), Audemars (sports and dress), Rolex (sports), Omega (sports).

I’m obviously not buying him a watch for his birthday (in his dreams!) but any idea for some good accessories? He’s already got a PP watch winder, and has bought multiple nice straps for the dress watches. I’m completely lost.

My in-laws used to own a jewelry store, and they had this Omega quartz watch in their storage. I can understand why this wasn’t sold during their clearance sale lol. I had no idea Omega made stuff like this in 1987! I guess they couldn’t help it after the rise of quartz watches in the 70s to 80s. I doubt they’re worth anything even to this day. I see them on eBay for $700-1200, so who knows…

What’s the best thing I could buy for my old man’s birthday for about $10k? Would go Rolex (since he knows Rolex) but would prefer new, which limits my options there. Looking for something a little sporty, with a bracelet, and waterproof (100m should suffice). Nothing bombastic like a Panerai, but something a little more exciting than say a Datejust? And not Grand Seiko - he’s gonna think it’s like $50 and lose it :(
