Getting a $100k USD remote job while living in Toronto or Vancouver has been the ultimate cheat code (hello $135k CAD). But recently, I'm seeing way more US job postings explicitly stating "Must reside in the US for tax purposes" or recruiters actively lowballing Canadian candidates with localized CAD bands. Are the golden days of US remote arbitrage over?

The thing is I'm based in a different city (southern U.S.)

My question is:

When it comes time to talk compensation, should I base the market rate for the role on my city of residence or NY?

Would it make sense to ask them directly how they determine comp for NY-bases vs. other city-based employees?
