Today, my entire class stated they do not feel comfortable working with the school's instructional coach. How can I, as a teacher, encourage them to open up and receive helpful strategies and help with their homework if they are not comfortable? Any suggestions? I don't have time to assist everyone.

You may have stepped in a mess by asking. People/students have to learn to work with different personality types. Just encourage your students to be kind and accepting. Stay in your lane. Do not allow them to say anything unkind in your presence, unless you think something illegal or immoral going on.

I am a little confused as to the job of an instructional coach. Where I work, the role would be to observe the teacher and give him helpful guidance with different aspects of the job that the teacher is struggling with. The teacher asks the coach to come and observe. There was one year where I had a double booked class. One class had one student with an aid, and his 6th grade curriculum. At the same time, a class of 7th graders working on something different. I needed the coach to help me figure out how to make it work. Can you please explain what the coach’s role is in the classroom?

I was wondering the same thing - an instructional coach here would also be a resource for teachers, not students.

Why? I think we need some more information here.

Teaching is an art, it stretches us. We all need to be safe, protected and respected. That’s important! However, comfortability can bring us into a detrimental place. Once we’re too comfortable, there is no room for growth. There are times, we all need to go back to our “WHY” we do what we do? Don’t hesitate to lovingly tell them the hard truth that can challenge them just as the eaglets when they are comfortable in their nests, their moms change the environment by stirring up their nest. We’re teachers, we can rise above, we can be flexible.

I appreciate your questions and feedback. None of the teachers are quite sure what the instructional coach's role is because usually, the person is attempting to tutor or assist the students. When the students are not vocal nor do they respond to the coach's requests to ask for assistance, then the coach will approach the teachers and ask why students do not feel comfortable with working together. This is initially how the topic arose.

Answer: Not your biz. Don't take it on unless you are prepared to talk to admin about that feedback (and unless there is fear of harm, I wouldn't be trying to get involved at all).

How do you engage your students in more reading outside of what is required in the classroom? With each passing year I am finding an ever shrinking population of students, including honors students, who actually read beyond what is posted in social media or video games. Students willingly volunteer that they do not read and most parents see it as a non-issue. I tell my students that the best readers are usually the best writers. What are some strategies that you use beyond reading logs ?
