I think i got mine down by $5-$10 less. I just straight up asked if there was any wiggle room and say you are looking for a hotel that can match a nightly rate close to $X. See what they say! Worse case, they'll just say sorry they can't do anything. It also helps to reach out to many other hotels in the area and you can say to a Marriott that a Hilton is offering you $25 less or something like that (if that's the case)

yes, but part of the key is negotiating to lower the block rate when you are negotiating the venue ( if you are at the same place). And look to not have to guarantee any number, ask for a rollung block...ie they add to your block if it fills. If you are just looking for good rates nearby, google room blocks, there is a site that will do it for you, and the managers send you emails with offers. You select which in the area interests you. You csn often use that to leverage against others. If they won't drop the room rstes much ask for free.
stuff....breakfast, parking, van use, wifi.
Also, be ready to walk away, I really prefer your hotel, but the zyx is offering B, if you can match that......or what can you do that gets us closer. Also, deal directly with the local hotel manager. However, if you are trying for a weekend with high occupancy....its tougher. Know what else is happening that weekend.
Good luck.
We didn't do a block. We created a discount code at a hotel we liked close to the venue. People had to book by a certain day, about 2 weeks before the wedding. Then the rooms would be released, and that way, we wouldn't have to be on the hook for stays. We toured about 3 in the area before deciding. Plus, with so many different hotel rewards programs and credit card travel rewards programs, a lot of people have their own preferences and might not stay where you have the block set.

You negotiated a block, you just didn’t guarantee a block...ie you didn’t guarantee to pay for a certain number of the rooms. That is one of the key factors you should negotiate.
