So, AE…mostly agree with you on everything you post about. But in this case, I do like Amtrak and dont think it should be privatized. i do wish the states took railways more seriously. So I disagree, but I respect your take. I hope we can still be cool
Yea, I have family in Fort Pierce and an old person is getting hit by Brightline every other day. The situation is horrible - but the train itself is really nice.
Recommend The Zephyr, The Empire Builder, & The Southwest Chief trainlines as well. Life changing!

Keep in mind that the only reason Amtrak exists is because private rail companies weren't profitable moving people and getting out of passenger service.

A1, wait … have you looked at Amtrak’s on time performance recently?
Hint: Frontier beat Amtrak handily.
Not to mention that as long as Frontier gets you to the destination in less than 4 days, you’re still doing better than a train.

Railroads fall under interstate commerce… so privatizing Amtrak, where a company would own already nationalized rail corridors would face the same hurdles as privatizing an interstate highway… the legal and logistical challenges… especially over track ownership and access rights, would make privatization nearly impossible…
States could theoretically charge access fees… but that would trigger federal and private litigation that would only be beneficial for attorneys and nobody would get anywhere…

From Washington DC to NY, Amtrak owns their lines… Amtrak operates nationally… you could argue that some of the rail lines are owned by Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, etc., and that’s fair… but thanks to Amtrak being federally covered, Amtrak has the legal right of access to their lines for a fee… something that would result in furious negotiations with a private carrier…
You could disband Amtrak, sure… do you know how incredibly expensive it would be to run a national rail carrier? Neither do I… but I’d imagine that it’s akin to why airlines aren’t popping up left and right… your Brightline, sounds like sunshine and rainbows… but the only one that I’ve found operates from Miami to Orlando, easy to win with a small territory… I’d imagine all that makes them great would significantly diminish with scale… like flying Private, it’s much better than commercial…
I’m in the alternate camp… I think that we should make significant investment in rail as a country to take the load off of the other failing infrastructure we have like roads and airports… 48 hours and 1 train switch from DFW to NYC… get that down to 12-15 hours, and I’d be onboard…

Similar ideology shared among peers? Most of the people on this bowl agree with almost everything each other says so the fact you think two people who share similar ideologies are the same person would basically distill this bowl down to two singular persons.

Privatization can work in select high traffic areas such as the Northeast corridor, but probably not on the lengthier routes. I've yet to hear that Brightline, or anyone else, is proposing a national rail service. Before Amtrak, going cross country often meant multiple tickets and hoping railroad 1 arrived in time for you to catch railroad 2's departure.
