Um….. you are wrong.
You do realize….
(Note sarcasm here)
That the Department of Education wasn’t even in existence until 1980
President Carter created it
Check the US Constitution
There is no mention of Federal responsibility for education, therefore it goes to the state.
We lived before the Federal DOE, we can do it again…. And better, I am sure.
Prior to the Fed getting their hands into everything and screwing it up (see the horrific NRP and their assenine Title IX regulations for examples), the Federal Government sent block grants to the states to assist with educational funding.

Title IX opened the door for girls sports. I remember when that happened, and it funds interventions from student services. It also protects against sexual harassment, assault, and intimate partner violence.

How did we get to a point where we believe that the federal Department of Education is what runs the public schools? I want the feds as far away from my job as possible. Has there been any time in human history where more bureaucracy has actually helped? If the DOE were eliminated and no one told you, you'd never know the difference. I say bring it on.

Do you want them in your doctors office? In the Emergency Room? I thought not!
Do you realize that there are 50 departments of education, one for each state. Many cities and counties also have their own
And no one is trying to eliminate those just the federal one.
Disbanding the Department of Education would not close a public school. Public Schools are run by states and local school boards and not the Federal Government .

Yes, there are federal mandates, but they don't make the schools function. If we look at the DOE's own reporting, all the mandates in the world haven't led to better results. In fact, according to them, American education hasn't advanced in over 30 years. That's not exactly what I'd call a great track record.
Honestly, the DOE needs to go away!!! It is run by a bunch of individuals who have never taught, never went to public school themselves, and don't send their kids to public schools. Yet, we have given them the power to make decisions about public education. Please look more into what this would actually mean. It seems like you may be falling for the narrative that some of the mainstream media is trying to push.
I totally agree. I love teaching, and I love my kids, but I would never homeschool them for a lot of reasons. One of them is I want there to be a distinction between being a teacher and being their mom, they need that from me.
I know plenty of homeschoolers for whom that is not a problem. Not saying homeschooling is right for you, just that this distinction is not a universal need.
Is the decline just about education or is it because parents need two incomes to live a better lifestyle? Also, who is taking care of the children when they get home so they have dinner, homework checked and conversation? Or, are parents fighting over the house chores? Family members are simply too exhausted to cook a proper homemade meal? I can think of a whole host of issues. When the child is sick is there time to have the child stay home and rest or just pushed to go to school anyway? Do the parents have energy to engage with their child? It takes a lot of work to do it all. Maybe homeschooling could be beneficial. Maybe this would make things more affordable for one parent to stay home, with less taxes to spend on government education and having millions of funds wasted. Especially with the constant rewriting of the same curriculum that is only repackaged and renamed to be the same stuff at the end of the day? These are the questions I have and topics I think about!

I agree. Soooo many kids have less than ideal home lives. This factor really does negatively impact these kids, esp the ability to be attentive, listen, be able concentrate, follow directions, plan, regulate emotions, and learn in school. I worked in elementary and outside of my sped direct service kids, I saw more general ed kids than ever. I always wonder about the sped students though when plans shift to such a degree ( funding etc). I miss working in the schools so much (retired in June 24), but it was even more demanding than ever, esp in terms of being somewhat responsible (and available) to all the kids in the entire school.
