At investment banks, how do you tell a company is over valued or undervalued? Based on p/e only or dcf? Because dcf results vary in a wide range, how is it accurate?

You generally provide a range of valuation since there are nuances into each company and valuation is not an exact science.

Run multiple types of valuation DCF, public comps will likely be the most useful enforcement public companies. You wanna make sure the comps make sense and are tailored to the company you're evaluating.

Anyone who knows anything, P/E is the last thing you would look at. There’s practically 0 comparable basis, plus no one cares about net income as a profitability measure. EV / EBIT/D/A/R/X etc. multiples are standard

R: restructuring and X: extraordinary/NRIs?

Def, comps, precedents, lbo to arrive at EV

subtract net debt to get to equity value

Divide by fully diluted shares outstanding

And arrive at a implied price per share

Put that puppy on a foot ball field and compare with current share price it’s trading at

As far as I have worked in investment research you will always get varying answers based on the model you use, at the end of the day my supervisors and mentors told me to always see what the clients requirements are and to use my judgement to see which model I used is more relevant to the case. You have to run scenarios as well - every model has its own drawbacks. Also never hurts to scan through other analyst perspective but don't concentrate too much on it.

I see a lot of conflation between state level and federal level policy in this bowl. I implore you, if you are interested in politics or improving the United States through public policy, that you first read up on our history, understand not just the constitution but the reasoning behind it (most of it is articulated in the federalist papers), and to travel outside of our mostly privileged city/suburb life to talk to the people who build our roads, process our cattle, drill our oil/gas, etc.

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.

I just graduated from a nontarget in Dec 2020 & am currently interning at PwC before I go back to do my Masters. My initial plan was to accept my full time offer and slowly work my way into IB.

I see postings right now for FT IB analyst programs. Should I even try applying online?

Interesting all the noise about these PPT, my take:

The pandemic took all the upside of an IB analyst life (client meetings in person, fancy trips, suit up, worshiped at networking events) and left all the juniors with the downside (long hours, monkey-like type of job, aggressive work environment).

Not that the complaints are not sort of legitimate but you may need to revise the decision-making process that led you to accept a return offer. Specially if you were looking for less hours.
