62 and holding. I’ll let you know.
Not just women, it starts at around 40
When you start looking your age
When you start acting your age…
I'm starting to feel the next move might not be so easy, but then I said that at 45, 49, 54, 58, and 60. Still in it.
My assumption is you end up going on pieces of business that are maybe less sexy? Currently 44 and took a gig on a very unsexy client for the $$. Seems to me lots of clients don’t actually want a 28 year old giving them advice…
From hiring age.
Commenting to follow. Curious to see responses.
Usually around graduation.
Well, why stop there, how about elementary school. Our entire system of social expectations, understanding, norms and values infiltrate there in classrooms and are at play for the entirety of our lives.
My specific question is about once a woman, or man, works up their career momentum, has achieved some success and influence, when does being older start to contract that sphere of potential and hurt them?
Seems a stupid situation to ask about because understanding, approach, and problem solving in that experience is everything in my mind. You can’t buy it, cheat, pretend for long, and it makes a huge difference in arriving at quality work faster.
Reality being what it is, curious to know when I can expect the age walls hit for me (as a woman).
Also if I were to look for a job elsewhere, how much harder is it to find that job, by what age should I make that last jump to be able to land somewhere else?
Right, “it should be about experience, talent, capability and a proven track record.”
That reads as cost, because of the value—it gets the job done. Younger, less seasoned, less nuanced can cost too with way more iterations and “try again” moments. Just review your older work and gauge your reaction to it. We evolve for the better the longer we do it.
I’m not knocking younger, the benefit is the older helping mentor/prune the less experienced. Younger have an energy and different perspective—it’s all valuable, that shouldn’t be to the exclusion of the experienced.
How are decision makers not understanding this?
For the people who answered “From hiring age” and “Usually around graduation”: where have you worked? I’ve never worked at an agency that was less than two-thirds women. Almost our entire account team is women. Most of our leadership team is women. Our strategy team is all women. The CFO is a woman. The CCO is a woman. We pay our female creatives a premium because they are harder to retain. I know of a woman on my team at my level who has won fewer awards and works on less valuable accounts than me who makes $60k more than I do, because that’s what it took to attract and retain her. My last agency was the same; 80% of our leadership team was women. Where have you been experiencing all this adversity throughout your entire career? Why can’t see how well women are doing?
I’ve been in Toronto most of my 30+ year career and this has not been my experience. I see lots of women in all levels of acct service, lots in strategy, fewer in creative and way fewer in C-level leadership. When I was last on an exec leadership team we were four women of ten total. I’m glad to hear your experience has been different. I hope the tides, they are a-changin’
42. It’s been rough
Older women have it much easier than older men in this industry. More women tend to leave advertising because of the poor work/life balance and unpredictable schedule, especially mothers. So at the CD level, there is a surplus of men. Female CDs are in high demand and get paid a premium.
