I guess, yeah. A full circle kind of thing
Manager1 – you are right that Boeing never had many people here, but that was the point; they wanted to put their headquarters in a location that was separate from the different divisions. And you are also right that they had their engineers in each of their other locations (Seattle, St. Louis, Seal Beach, etc.) Regardless, the people that they DID have here were all very high income people that are no longer paying taxes and spending money in IL. In addition, being an Illinois company at the time, Boeing was paying Illinois income taxes, and now they do not…
So anyway, you look at it, it is a loss
@EY1 we last 12 high paying jobs in Chicago because Boeing is gone, not a big deal! Last CEO was remotely working form SC or GA, barely stepped a foot in the Chicago office. I wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t any real Boeing office in Chicago aside from the building logo. After 10 years living the downtown area, I have never met a single person who worked for Boeing. Meanwhile, I met dozens who worked for United Airlines, EY, McKinsey, Baxter, Abbott etc. Boeing was never integrated with Chicago, probably because no one worked there!
Boeing used to be my dream company to work for when I first graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree in 2011 and my eyes used to be peeled onto their career. They never had any job opening for engineers in the Chicago office. Only jobs that were ever available in their Chicago office were finance, accounting, and may be lawyers. Chicago was Boeing HQ only on papers, I bet it never employed more than 200 people here. So yeah, for all practical purposes Boeing was never in Chicago. Therefore, loss of Boeing is not very meaningfull.
