I find that I have to be very organized with my time and make sure that I take breaks throughout the day. I also try to get up and move around a bit every hour or so.
It can be difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle when you spend most of your time at a desk. Make sure to exercise regularly, drink lots of water, and get enough sleep! I'm sure that it's not much, but if you take care of your body, it will thank you.
It's not always that you will feel motivated to move or workout after a 10 hour day especially at an engineering firm. But personally for me committing myself to home workout programs or workout classes or a gym trainer helps. Because even on days you lack motivation or feel lazy to move, the reminder from the class or trainer, helps you to stay accountable and committed. And eventually it gets addictive that I am sure you will look forward to finishing your day and hitting the gym. Good luck!
That's definitely true, sometimes you will go entire weeks without feeling the motivation. But when you force yourself to do it anyway, you will still be making progress. You might even start to look forward to working out. Gives you a chance to work out some of that frustration on a physical level.
I use the 20/20/20 rule, don't remember where I learned it. Every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to focus on something that is at least 20 feet away. It reduces eyestrain from just staring at a computer screen all day. Also reminds you that there is still a world outside of your cubicle
Bringing my own lunch really helps me, not just because it saves money but because it's healthier (depending on what I bring LOL). I have a personal rule that I can't eat it at my desk, I have to be outside. So that forces me to get fresh air every day for at least a little bit of time. Really helps my productivity too
I try to go to the local gym over lunch with a coworker at least a few days a week. Good chance to shoot the breeze for a few minutes, get the blood flowing, and somewhat resets my mind for the afternoon.
