But I think some things will shift a bit, like remote working will be more accepted, telemedicine more common, etc
Wasn’t there a new normal after 9/11? Most don’t notice it or don’t care but it is certainly different. A new normal is always being created and creators know this. But those who mostly consume just jump from trend to trend without much thought. Kind of like boiling a frog by gradually increasing the temp.
I believe societies response will differ depending on each nations response to the virus. For example, East Asian countries were comfortable with masks as it wasnt alien their culture arising from their experience with SARS in early 2000s.
Similarly, organisational and societal culture may not change overnight but would be nudged towards certain behaviours which could have a cumulative impact in the long term. Eg: 1. adoption of work from home which once was an alien concept in Asian countries (for sure in mine at least) now might be looked at favourably (pesimist in me says that it's most likely as people tend to work longer hours when the lines between work and home are blurred leading to higher productivity gains for the employer lol) 2. Online learning will have a larger focus 3. Acceleration of the decimation of brick and mortar stores
Now, countries which have taken a cavalier attitude to the virus like the US and UK will imo not change much.
Agreed
Rising Star
Agree. The world will keep spinning and there will be something new to worry about.
Agreed. I saw an interview with someone about I think it was the Spanish flu who essentially said the same thing. It was different for 1-2 years after with it always in the back of their minds, people not shaking hands, and being much more cautious in general, but after that things basically went back to how they were beforehand. I think it’ll be even quicker this time if the posts I’m seeing of people claiming their rights are being violated, we need to build our immune systems and herd immunity, no masks etc etc are any indication too.
I agree. Lot of panic mongering in media as panic content is shareable on social media but not necessarily the truth.
No, we are not running out of meat. Stop making tyson foods executives richer.
I agree. I think the new norm will be temporary. When the majority of people get the vaccine life should go back to normal. I think a great comparison is the Spanish flu pandemic.
Chief
5 years from now, things will be as they were, except perhaps with more WFH opportunities, and maybe handshakes will become fully replaced by elbow bumps. Spanish flu killed way, way more people than coronavirus will, and shit went back to normal. Zero reason to think it won't now.
The next 1-2 years though? Yeah, it's going to be weird. I had to go to the pharmacy the other day (just drive through), and it was surreal as fuck. Everyone in masks, wearing gloves, etc.
I'm still taking every paranoid precaution, but part of me thinks that if I was like 20 and single, I'd purposely expose myself so I could get the antibodies and stop worrying so much about every little thing. Of course, as it stands, I'm middle aged, married, and have kids, so that's not an option.
I think remote working or semi-remote working may be more prevalent. If the work still gets done, and the company saves money on real estate, it’ll remain because it’s in companies’ best interest
Agreed, and anecdotally talking to my family, it’s already happening with the general public outside of major cities.
