I would say 7 YOE this is quite good

like

agree with first poster, assuming the industry is stable and not prone to fire drills

like

Good comp especially if you get equity.

like

As a data point, I’m also 7 YOE in Seattle. 260k base, 15% bonus, and 50K RSUs each year.

NJ.

That's very solid

What's the equity grant? This is good cash comp, esp for NJ.

like

As a data point, I'm 6 YOE in VHCOL. 275k base, no bonus, 4% match, ~150k/year equity (pre-IPO). I think I'm top of market, even for VHCOL. Assuming your equity is liquid, you're absolutely crushing it with NJ COL.

like

For comparison, I'm 7 YOE, MCOL, 190k base, 36K cash bonus, 36K RSUs in pubco. I think I'm underpaid, but I think your comp is pretty good.

How many hours of actual work?

Got it, honestly not bad. Anything below 30 of actual work that requires some thought is very relax imo

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

My company cut staff to 4 days/wk to save funds. I was getting requests from coworkers for docs needed urgently on our day off (fridays). I would oblige them. But then, I learned that those same coworkers had been put back to 5 days because they were deemed “essential“. I felt foolish and decided to stop working on fridays. One EVP (not the GC) in particular has been aggressively texting/calling me on fridays. How Do I tactfully respond? My out-of-office email is not enough of a hint...

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. Is it worth trying to get a counter to stay if I get the bigger offer?

Maybe a dumb question for a lawyer, but is it normal to not be allowed to review an invention assignment agreement and post-employment restrictive covenant agreement at the offer letter stage? I’m told they can’t share prior to onboarding (I’ll be asked to sign them then) but I know I’m not going to sign some crazy non-compete so would like to see the drafts before accepting the offer.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. I don’t want to be miserable again. I know Amazon is poorly reputed for lawyer WLB… what about other places?

Anyone going to the security/privacy conference in DC this week?

When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager.
