Where are you located now?
Phoenix (well technically a subburb) currently!
Although I have family and friends here and enjoy the sunshine and laid back lifestyle, mountains, etc, the tax market is just so tiny for such a large city. Recently several of my closest friends moved away or are contemplating moving to the east coast. It got me thinking about also making a move to change things up and for more tax opportunities and clients.
New York always sits at the top for tax lawyers. Quality of life is high if you enjoy urban things (culture, fine dining, etc).
San Francisco and/or Silicon Valley is probably 2nd best for career opportunities. It’s got both finance and tech. Quality of life there is more well rounded with great weather and lots of outdoorsy things, plus great food & urban culture to boot!
Houston is a dark horse. Lots of business opportunities but more focused on oil & gas / infrastructure. Lower cost of living but not sure about the lifestyle.
How much do you care about weather?? I loved Dallas and I’m from LA originally. We were transferred back to CA but I really, really enjoyed living in Dallas. Great restaurants, shopping, airport that gets you anywhere in the world, museums, theater etc. The weather in the summer sucks but there is so much to do and you do get used to it. I suppose the politics can be weird but honestly the state is so diverse you can find your bubble. ;-)
Lots of demand now in Florida with a number of funds and tech start ups moving. The demand is still high in SF/SJ, but consider the COL. Consider Chicago as well, lots of manufacturing companies and pharma.
I'm thinking the same thing. I have nothing tying me down where I'm at currently so looking ay Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Charlotte/Raleigh. All have different industries but very large F500 companies. I'm in a specialty group so more national team so regardless if where I go, I'll be fine. It's def a lot to think about since there are so many options.
Are you me and my wife haha? We’re considering all of those cities on our shortlist + DC lol. We’re really leaning NC in a perfect world since it seems to have a great balance of everything we’re looking for, including a great place to start a family.
I can personally attest to Denver being one of my favs (been there more times than I can count lol). If you like Denver, you’d like Seattle. Minneapolis if you can steady the winter is amazing too. Very bikable, reasonable cost, great schools, restaurants, etc.
