Could someone explain to me what happens to the Americans that are left behind in Afghanistan?

I have no way to know for sure, but if I have to guess, I'd say these Americans likely have ties to Afghanistan through family (blood or marriage). Most of them probably could pass as Afghans (or hope they could). They likely want to leave but chose not to because of their family. Some people here already have given examples of why that is, e.g. their extended family members couldn't travel for whatever reason or had problem obtaining the right paperwork in the time allowed. The bottom line is it was their choice.

This happens more often than you would assume in these situations, especially if you don't have exposure to people with an immigrant/refugee background (not saying that was OP). During the fall of Phnom Penh to the Khmer rouge in Cambodia, one relative of mine had dual citizenship and could have evacuated but decided to stay behind to take care of a family member in the hospital. They ended up in a labor camp for 3 years but they said they had no regrets.

I'm glad OP is asking this question so we all have the opportunity to discuss it. I hope people realize that the situation is dynamic and there are a lot of nuances. There's certainly mismanagement and terrible planning. But let's avoid jumping to the conclusion that the government is abandoning their own people, or that these people are irresponsible or reckless.

TM: the CDC recently had to fix their data when reporting Florida cases because they had inflated the numbers. That could be the reason for the change.

More Americans will die of covid tomorrow than there are left in Afghanistan.

…. Please provide citations and comparisons to other countries efforts to be taken as more than a pot stirrer

They’re fucked. No better way of saying it. If they aided the US military these last 20 years they’re as good as dead.

They will wish they were dead *

It’s not fair to say they were left behind after this massive effort to evacuate everyone, including before the Taliban took over. These Americans stayed behind, we can only pray for their safety.

likefunny

Say what you will. Our soldiers died getting people out, they put their lives on the line. Anyone who wasn’t willing to risk their own life to get out made a choice. A choice they put off for months while the withdrawal was underway.

like

They think there is another 100-200 remaining who actually want to leave. I’m sure State Dept and intel agencies are coordinating to get them out, but obviously that has become much more difficult now.

These folks are probably more concerned about ISIS than the Taliban. It really doesn’t make much sense for the Taliban to harm them for fear of provoking an American response. They could also be used as a bargaining chip with the US.

like

If they are unable to get out, they seriously risk being tortured, held for ransom, and killed by the Taliban. Why?

Literally no-one knows. The uncertainty is why there is so much concern.

If they want out, they’ll have to go through whatever the Taliban establishes for normal commercial air travel or make their way over land to a border. If they want to stay, they’ll have to live with whatever impositions the Taliban puts in place for US citizens living in Afghanistan.

like

Assuming Turkey can establish civilian flights out of Kabul in the coming weeks then those Americans left can potentially exit via commercial flights. All signs point to the Taliban continuing to allow Americans to leave peacefully. They have no desire for CNN headline with a dead American. They want control of the country and will continue to be patient while the withdrawal noise blows over.

They either find their own way out or they are hunted down, interrogated and slaughtered or traded for money or weapons. Just a guess.
