Yeah, with all the layoffs going on in this economy, nobody is really safe. That being said, I definitely think we're all a little bit more secure in a large corporation rather than, say, a startup or something. But I definitely like the startup culture a lot more, so it's a trade off.
I personally love working for smaller companies. I think it really depends on the company itself, because sometimes bad ownership/leadership can lead to worse WLB, compensation, etc. But I generally find that smaller companies offer me greater flexibility, loyalty, and I feel more appreciated/respected.
Smaller companies mean fewer resources, and you're doing more with less, sometimes entirely on your own with no team. So it can be pretty stressful with long hours and having to be a jack of all trades. But on the flip side, this means they really can't afford to lose you, so layoffs are less likely. So sort of a silver lining to the situation that is often crappy, if I'm being honest, in smaller, disorganized companies.
There are pros and cons to both smaller and larger companies. I had a wonderful experience in a smaller company, where you get more visibility, more personable with people. I worked with people and I got to know and like them. Not something I can say when I was at bigger companies, but mileage will vary on that.

Job security is a myth in my opinion. Anyone from the CEO to the newest hire can be let go at any given time whether the company is big or small. Personally I have always preferred smaller companies because they always have better work life balance.
