Curious: When working at home (Nights or Weekends)… Are you more productive or do you enjoy having a desktop versus a laptop? I love my laptop but sometimes I find myself wishing I was at the office on my big screen. Thinking of getting a desktop for home but also understand that it may be a mega waste of money. Anyone else struggle with this?

I have 2 monitors set up at home plus a docking station for my laptop. It’s essentially the same set-up as my office.

My home setup is better than my work setup. One massive curved screen and an aeron chair. It really helps with the later nights.

Get monitors and a docking station. I had them before the pandemic honestly. No reason to stay in the office super late if you have an equal set-up at home.

I have a giant monitor at home. But I also mostly work remote. I bought all my equipment myself for my home office and left work equipment at my office desk.

My home office is honestly nicer than my actual office.

I have a third monitor in my home office, a TV, and I’m within stumbling distance of my bedroom and kitchen. Plus, I can play music or have the TV on and don’t need to wear headphones. Is nice

Think about getting a lightweight portable monitor. I have the thinkpad m14t and I looooooove it (also comes in a non touchscreen version). The monitor literally weighs less than my big iPhone. It just drains a lot of battery though so you need to keep your laptop plugged in. But so great for having a second screen wherever you go!

If you’re like me and like working in your bed, then you can even have two screens there too! It’s great.

XL monitor and docking station with wireless keyboard and mouse at my “workstation.” Portable/travel monitor that slides out from my laptop when I’m casually working from the couch. It makes life SO much easier and more productive when I WFH

At home I connect my laptop to a dual monitor setup that is identical to my office setup.

I found a company I was really excited about working at. I applied for the job and went through 5 rounds of interviews. At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!

Have any of you approached your employer for reimbursement for being asked to use your phone at work? Specifically things like texting your boss while they are in court? I started a new job and am trying to set boundaries but this is one that I cannot set as it is standard practice. In our state, an employer must reimburse you if they direct you to use your personal phone for work. It seems petty, but I’m trying to (rightfully) cash in on something that I would rather not have to do.

Hey guys. So I am an actuarial analyst who got started about three months ago. I had a chance to do a data scientist intern, which I really loved. I am three months into the full time position as an actuarial analyst and I am finding the job not as exciting. It certainly isn’t what I have expected. Does anyone have any experience of moving out of the actuarial world to the data science role? How hard was the transition? What are the steps that you took? I am seeking for advice and help! Thanks!

Seeking advice ...
Currently working in Due Diligence and looking to switch to either IM or Consulting. I’m really looking to grow and I recently got an offer for a TP role at one of the big four. Should I take the offer and then pivot to a management consultant role from there or should I stay in banking and try to get myself into IM? What are my options? Thanks!

HELP! I’ve been contacted by a small private security firm who wants me to be their “on call” counsel. They describe it as a lot of contract review, drafting NDAs, etc. but also being there if/when they need to license a vehicle, defend civil suit, etc. It’s overwhelming but sounds like a really great opportunity. I have enough background to be comfortable with contracts and litigation, but don’t want to get myself into a mess. Has anybody else ever had a job like this?

Just verbally accepted an offer to become the newest partner at a much bigger firm in town after 5+ years slaving for a smaller firm that told me they would only “let” me be of counsel (and pay rent equal to my current salary) or stay an associate. Trying to make the move to in house but most of my career has been litigation in various areas of law. I am trying to pick up some transactional work to get more experience. I am a quick learner and have no doubt I can move into more in house areas but it’s so hard to even get an interview to explain. Very few entry level jobs when I graduated and now can only get jobs in the stuff I don’t want to do anymore.

While I absolutely love the people I work with, and I can handle the hour requirement, the work I actually do is just not my cup of tea (abt 80% insurance defense). I’m hoping to lateral to a bigger firm with lockstep or close to lockstep comp and generally more resources/better mentorship opportunities in the business lit./commercial lit. space. Any tips for going about successfully making the switch?
